The Catawba Crossings Project will evaluate the feasibility of a new alignment roadway between NC 279 (S. New Hope Road) in southeastern Gaston County to NC 160 (Steele Creek Road) in western Mecklenburg County. The Project includes two new bridges over the South Fork Catawba River and Catawba River (Lake Wylie) and a new interchange with I-485 south of the West Boulevard interchange. The Project is an important component of the region’s future transportation system.
In order to fully address the congestion problems experienced on the area transportation network, the GCLMPO continues to seek funding for the Catawba Crossings Project. The Catawba Crossings Project is included in Gaston-Cleveland-Lincoln Metropolitan Planning Organization’s (GCLMPO) 2045 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) (Amended January 23, 2020) as a 2035 Horizon Year Highway Project. GCLMPO recommends a four-lane divided Boulevard section; however, the number of lanes will be determined by traffic studies.
The Catawba Crossings Project will produce traffic studies, conceptual roadway design plans, and a Feasibility Study Report that will address:
The Feasibility Study will provide GCLMPO with the data necessary to submit the Catawba Crossings Project for NCDOT’s Prioritization 7.0 in 2023. Following the project prioritization process, the Project could be programmed for preliminary engineering and environmental studies, right of way, and construction as part of the NCDOT’s State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP).
